COLOR MIXING PAINT COLORS

When I was a small child, my mom and dad brought their first house.  The attic was un-done, and they took on the project of creating bedrooms, and a bathroom up there.  The most fascinated part of the experience was when they painted the walls.  They had this big can of white paint.

When color was squeezed into the white paint, from a tube called pigment, it changed the bland white paint into a beautiful lilac color which was put on the walls.  They actually hovered over that can of paint until they got the desired color that they wanted.  It was amazing.

When mixing any paint, with the intent to change the color or hue, all you need to do is add another color.

HOW TO MIX PAINTS

Tinting

When adding white to another color it is called tinting.  For instance, let’s say you have a navy blue color, if you add the desired amount of white you can change the navy blue into a pale, or baby blue color.

Shading

This process is called shading.  If you want the color to become darker add a little or a lot of black to the color.  Depending on how much black you add, will determine how deep the color becomes.

If you want to achieve a shade darker add black.  Example, Sienna is a shade of brown.

If you want to get a different tint add white.  Example, dark blue has a tint of white in it, making pastel blue.

White, black or gray has no color or hue.  These Fashion Colors are considered achromatic or neutral.

Hue

The hue is the specific color without black or white added to it.

HOW TO CREATE
HUES OF COLOR

A hue can be neutralized by adding some of its complement to it.

  • Neutralize any hue by adding its complement
  1. Black colors are seriousness, nobility, experience, perfection, and more.  Other colors of black are charcoal, carbon black, ebony, onyx, and ivory black.
  2. Brown  there are a lot of different color combinations that will make brown. Here are a few color combinations for what two colors make brown:
  3. Gray is created with the hues of white and black.  Get the color and meaning, and color symbolism information for grey colors search for colour names.
  4. Umber + White = Taupe  a sophisticated color, with an air of stability. The color is warm and comfortable.
  5. White cannot be created by mixing paint colors.  Technically (ex. computers) white is created  by mixing red, blue and green in equal parts.  In Western cultures the color meaning of white represents new beginnings, and clear endings.

Saturation

  • The saturation is the vibrancy of the color.
  • Low saturation is more gray or dull.
  • Full saturation is bright.

Value

  • Value is the lightness or darkness of the color.
  • Low value is black.
  • High value is white.

MIXING PAINT TIPS

  • Ensure when you are mixing paint the color is blended well, and experiment until you get the exact shade you are looking for.
  • It is a good idea to try a couple of shades on the surface to see how it actually looks in the room. Some rooms have more, or less sunlight which can effect the way a color looks on its surface.
  • Remember that after paint is newly applied to a surface, the color always looks a shade darker when it is wet, or newly applied.
  • Create neutrals by adding the colors black, or white.
  • Be careful if you add too much black the color will disappear.
